Treatment of Ironstone Ceramic Plate




Description
Object is made of clay (stoneware). It is a high-fired, glazed ironstone plate (functional flatware). Clay body is off-white with hints of grey. Plate is glazed white with slight grey hue. Rim is decorated with floral/leaf motif that is glazed black, brown, pale yellow, and a grey-green.
Object has been broken into five separate sherds. A rim piece is missing and will need to be replaced, as per client’s request. Object shows signs of wear – scratches likely from cutlery use.
Treatment Summary

Plate was reassembled using a pre-mixed paraloid B-72 (ethyl methacrylate co-polymer) adhesive

Area of loss located on the rim was filled using dental grade plaster and wax mold

Interior and exterior fill was finished using a metal rasp, sandpaper, and Micro-mesh

Fill was inpainted using acrylic paint

Motif was carbon transferred onto fill

Fill was glazed and topcoat of acrylic finish was applied
