French Canadian artist, Ozias Leduc (1864-1955) completed Saint Ninian’s wall paintings in 1903.

Original interior paintings are covered in multiple layers of overpaint.

Painting of Saint Matthew has sustained substantial damage.
Treatment Summary
-
Hepa Filter Vacuuming: vacuuming crevices to remove dirt, dust, and paint flakes no longer in situ.

Consolidation and Stabilization: reattachment of peeling paint using adhesive and distilled water mixture, steaming of surface, followed by application of heat (tacking iron) and pressure to secure attachment

Overpaint Removal: hand cut cotton swabs dipped into solvent, humidification chamber created with Mylar. Removal of overpaint by layer with surgical scalpel. Stabilization of friable paint pigments with heat, glue and distilled water mixture.

Surface Cleaning: Removal of dirt and glue residue from surface.

Varnish brushed onto wall painting.

Inpainted all areas of loss: free hand and stencil.
Conservation treatment is currently ongoing
